Bravettes, Braves sitting first

HELENA - Not too shabby.

In fact, pretty darn good.

Both Flathead track teams lead the Western AA divisional after the first day.

The Bravettes have scored 71 points and have divisional champions in Tera Klein (3,200) and Emilee Hashley (shot put). They have qualified 13 girls for next weekend's Class AA state meet in Butte.

Butte is second with 51 points and Helena High has 44.

The Braves have 78 points and also have two divisional champs. Dan Ogden won shot put and Seth Grossman the 3,200. The boys have qualified 15 for state.

Big Sky is second with 56 and Butte has 46.

"A very satisfying day. In all the events run today, there were nine finals and we placed in seven of them," said Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge.

"Actually a little better than I expected, than what I thought we would do," he said.

The only bad news of the day concerned Bravette 800 runner Shannon Ross.

"She got on the bus this morning and got sicker than sick," Boschee said.

Ross ran the first lap of the 800, then had to bow out.

"That was our one disappointment. She worked so dang hard to get to this point. She was miserable. Hopefully, she can get a good night's sleep tonight and feel better," he said.

"But that was the only downfall of the day. Otherwise, things went pretty dang well for us," the coach said.

"I'm really happy with where we are. Seventy-one points, I could never have imagined. We scored in every event," he said.

"We started rolling right away and it just continued through the day," Boschee said. "I think the girls really responded to the competition today."

"Tera Klein ran phenomenal in the 3,200," Boschee said.

Katie Gilboy of Helena Capital was second. Gilboy is "really good. But about the fifth lap, Tera decided enough was enough and the race was hers. It was exciting to watch," the coach said.

He also commented on Hashley's win in the shot.

"She's getting more and more consistent. If she can put it together, she's a 40-foot plus," he said.

But Boschee has already begun to fret about today's competition.

Butte is second with 51 points - and has the two best hurdlers in the division, he said. He expects the Bulldogs to score 18 points in the 100 hurdles.

"And then all of a sudden we have a 2-point lead," he worried.

"Butte is looking really good right now. I think Butte is going to be right in there and Big Sky will make a run. It's going to be a nailbiter."

Field events begin today at 10:30 a.m. Running is at 11:30 a.m.
