FHS boys qualify 17 for state; FHS girls to send 16

The Daily Inter Lake

HELENA - It was all Flathead Saturday on the final day of the Western AA divisional track meet at Vigilante Stadium.

The Flathead boys edged Butte 118-117 to claim the team title while the FHS girls won with a little more comfort, also besting Butte, but by a 128-109 count.

Seth Grossman was the lone winner for the Braves on the final day, posting a first-place time of 4:17.22 in the 1,600. That time is the second fastest by a Flathead athlete.

Flathead placed in seven of the eight events held Saturday, getting shut out in only the 110 hurdles. The Braves had no second-place finishers, but Reed Watkins, 400, and Dan Odgen, discus, both added thirds.

Odgen's performance put FHS on top.

"The very last event of the day, the discus," said FHS coach Dan Hodge.

"Dan Ogden, on his last throw, moved from sixth to third place, which gave us enough points to win the meet. That was kind of exciting at the very end."

The Braves had two individual placers in three events on Saturday - 400, 1,600 and triple jump.

"We scored in a lot of events," Hodge said. "Those little things help you."

Flathead led Big Sky after Friday's competition, 78-56. Butte was third with 46 points.

Grossman was the lone double divisional winner for the FHS boys as he won the 3,200 on Friday.

Odgen won the shot put title on Friday.

The divisional title was the seventh in a row for the Bravettes. They placed in eight of the nine finals held Saturday, missing out in only the high jump.

Jenae Lister was the Bravettes lone individual champ on the final day, winning the 400, 58.05.

The other first for Flathead was turned in by the 1,600 relay team of Ashley Younkin, Heidi Windauer, Nicole Hall and Shannon Ross. They were timed in 4:03.69.

Lister also placed second in the 200 while Ross was third in the 400 and Samantha Gunlikson was third in the triple jump.

"Lister's 200 and 400 (times) were amazing," said Flathead girls coach Jerry Boschee.

"Season bests. Pretty phenomenal the way she ran."

The FHS girls had two finishers in three events - 200, 400 and triple jump - on Saturday.

"It ended up being depth, but more so, the girls talked about winning seven (straight) divisional titles," Boschee said.

Flathead's total after Friday's opening-session was 71 points. Butte was in second place and 20 points behind. Winning events that day for the Bravettes were: Tera Klein, 3,200, and Emilee Hashley, shot put.

"Butte started out the day scoring 16 points in the high hurdles," Boschee said.

"All of a sudden we're ahead by two points. Our kids stepped up and countered it. It was kind of like a heavyweight matchup going round-by-round. The mile relay, triple jump and 200 were the last three events of the day. We just poured it on them."

The Class AA state meet begins Friday in Missoula. The Flathead boys will have 17 athletes competing in 13 events.

Watkins will compete in five - 400 and 1,600 relays, long and triple jump, and the 400.

Orion Bras is going in three - 400, 800 and 1,600 relay - along with Ogden - both weight events and javelin.

The Flathead girls are sending 16 athletes in 15 events. The Bravettes will have no entrants in the 110 hurdles and high jump.

Lister will compete in five events - 200, 400, 800 and both relays - Hall in four - 100, 200 and b0th relays - and Gunlikson three - 300 hurdles, long and triple jump.
