WHS boys finish 3rd in Class A state golf

The Daily Inter Lake

BUTTE - A disappointing first day at the Class A state golf tournament for the Whitefish girls did not lead to a disappointing outcome for the defending state champions.

The Bulldogs trailed Glendive by 12 shots following Thursday's action of the two-day event.

"They did believe (they could win it)," said WHS coach Terry Nelson.

"We (coaches) thought they would win it, they thought they would win it and they did. They pulled it off. We had a great day."

Whitefish, 717, rebounded in a big way on the final day, capturing the title by 11 shots. It was the 14th state championship for Whitefish's girls under Nelson and their 16th overall.

Glendive, the first-day leader, finished second, 729. Polson came in third, 763.

Quinn Micklewright led the Bulldogs, finishing third overall, 173.

"Just a great tournament for Quinn," Nelson said.

"She seems to play her best in the biggest tournaments. She rallies at the right time."

The WHS girls had two more players place in the top 10. Chelsea Ray was fourth, closing with a 37 on the back nine, for a 175. BreAnna Cameron tied for eighth, 180.

Polson's Julia DiGillanordo came in seventh, 178.

Kalli Stanhope of Glendive was the medalist, 160.

"Our only senior (Ray)," Nelson said.

"It was nice to see her finish so strong."

It marked the second straight year Micklewright, Ray and Cameron finished in the top 10 at state.

The Whitefish boys, seeking a fourth-straight state championship, wound up third overall, 646.

Hamilton, 619, took the top spot with Billings Central, 644, placing second.

"Hamilton deserved to win," Nelson said.

"They shot 301 today. That's a great score for a team.

Whitefish's Sam Krause, last year's state medalist, settled for fourth place, 153.

"He had a pretty good tournament; a pretty disappointing final day," Nelson said.

"I would have bet anyone he would have won it. I have a lot of confidence in him."

Whitefish had another top-10 finisher in Andre Groschupf. He tied for ninth, 159.

"Those are our two seniors," Nelson said.

"It's good to see them get all-state (honors).

"I'm really proud of the way they all played," he added.

"We gave it our all."

Libby's Jim Mee finished third, 148.

Jake Wilson of Hamilton was the medalist. He beat Josh Grenier, also of Hamilton on the second playoff hole. Both finished at 145 for 36 holes.
