BOZEMAN - No surprises here.

Glacier and Larry Iverson III are sitting on top after opening-round play Monday at the Class AA state high school golf tournament.

Glacier, with four individuals scoring under 80, shot a blistering 294 team score at Riverside County Club to flirt with a state record.

The one-day low round in state play for a team is 291. That is held by Billings West, set in 2004. West also owns the tournament low two-day score at 586, also set in 2004.

Iverson turned in the best round of the day, shooting 4-under par 67.

"Just solid golf," Glacier coach Rob Logsdon said of Iverson's performance.

"He just didn't make any mistakes, a typical Larry round. He left himself a ton of birdie chances."

Iverson shot 34 on the front and 33 on the back.

Iverson tied for fourth last year in state individual play. He finished 14 shots off the pace.

"Larry has to come out tomorrow and shoot another low round (to stay in first)," Logsdon said.

"I'm sure that's what he's thinking."

Austin Dean of Billings West is currently holding down second place with a 69. Andy Rutz of Billings Senior is third with a 71.

Last year's state medalist, Jake Hedge of West, is tied for 10th with a 76.

West, the defending team champion, is nine shots back in second place at 303. Billings Senior, 304, is third.

Flathead, 334, is 13th.

"The kids are excited," Logsdon said, "but they know they have a lot of work to do tomorrow.

"I told the boys to keep the hammer down," Logsdon added.

"West is capable of shooting a low team score. They can shoot in the low 290s tomorrow."

Today's play shifts to Bridger Creek Golf Course for the final 18.

Glacier had three golfers crack the top 10.

Aaron Young carded a 73, which put him in a three-way tie for fourth place.

Grahm Schmaltz shot 76, which ties him for 10th place.

"His best round," said Logsdon of Young.

"Grahm Schmaltz really gutted it out. He opened with a 41 and came back with a 35. That was huge for us."

Justin Newton was Glacier's other scorer. He shot 41-37-78.

Ben Piersall's 80 paced Flathead. Jaden Treece and Ian Gillespie were next with 81s.

Glacier is sixth and Flathead 10th in girls' play.

The Wolfpack, led by Karli Aurich's 80, shot a team score of 395.

Flathead shot 406.

Bozeman currently holds down first place with a 334. West, the defending champion, is second, 341, with Butte third, 350.

"That's her best high school round," Logsdon said of Aurich.

"She made the turn at 43 and closed with a 37. She missed a short birdie (putt) on the last hole."

Aurich is currently seventh in the medalist chase.

Ashleigh Ogolin of Butte shot a 73 to top the leaderboard. Rikka Holiday of Bozeman and Alexa Bell of C.M. Russell are second. Both shot 75.

Besty Engle's 94 was the best round for a Bravette on the day.
