Harold Kolden, 95

Harold Kolden, 95, passed away very early Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007. Harold was born Sept. 21, 1912, in Hallock, Minn., the second of six children born to Knute and Anna (Hoversland) Kolden. The family moved to a homestead at the Cottonwood area north of Wolf Point in 1917.

As a young man, he left the homestead to attend mechanics school in Fargo, N.D. He drove a truck for the building of Fort Peck Dam and was the camp barber in the evenings, using hand-powered clippers.

On Oct. 30, 1939, he married Ruth Moen in Whitefish. During World War II, he worked as a welder in the shipyards in Vancouver, Wash. Well known as a top car and diesel mechanic, he worked for car dealers in Whitefish and later on, large trucks and equipment in logging and road construction.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Leif, Leslie and Einar; and a sister, Aagot Johnson.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Missoula; daughters, Janice Potter of Spokane, Karen and Allen Dykstra of Thompson Falls, Lois and Richard Benjamin of Great Falls, and Marla and Howard Dykstra of Plains; son, Norman and Bonnie Kolden, of Missoula; one sister, Margaret Deering, of Shelby; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and too many friends to count.

Visitation for Harold will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at the Flathead County Fairgrounds Expo Center, with burial afterward at Glacier Memorial Gardens.
