Vandenburg, Borgmann win titles at 26th Le Grizz

Brian Vandenburg of Spokane, Wash., was the overall winner of the 26th Le Grizz 50-Mile Ultramarathon footrace held Saturday along the west shore of Hungry Horse Reservoir.

Vandenburg completed the race in 6 hours, 36 minutes and 1 second.

A record 85 runners from 14 states and four Canadian provinces completed the race. Of the finishers, 28 had never run 50 miles before.

In the Masters Division (ages 40-49), Charles Corfield of Boulder, Colo., placed first in 6:53:43. John Hallsten of Helena took the Seniors Division (50-and-Over) in 7:57:50.

Kendra Borgmann of Missoula topped the women's field in 6:40:33. Her time is the second fastest ever, missing the record set in 1985 by Bobbie Pomroy of Clancy by less than 3 minutes. Borgmann was also the second finisher overall.

Francesca Hankins of Spokane, Wash., running her first 50-miler, took the Masters Division in 8:26:43. Cindy Weaver of Whitefish, also completing her first 50-miler, was the first Seniors runner in 9:49:42.

Le Grizz is USA Track and Field Montana's 50 Mile Championship. Borgmann took the Montana honors, while Andrew Gideon of Thompson Falls posted 8:33:55 as the first Montanan in the Men's Open Division.

Montana Masters winners were Allie Wood (11:22:04) of Red Lodge for the women and Mark Tarr (7:16:48) of Columbia Falls for the men.

Three 10 Bears plaque clocks were awarded to runners who completed their 10th Le Grizz. One went to Pam Naugle of Butte, who now lives in Helena, and a matched pair went to Joy and Byron Chikinda of Edmonton, Alberta.

Two 10 Cubs plaque clocks were awarded to event staff for completing 10 years of service. Steve Bolling received one as massage therapist, and John and Evelyn Pacheco received one for managing course checkpoints.
