Bravettes advance in state play

HELENA - The Flathead girls get to play on while the season ended for the FHS boys on Friday at the Class AA state soccer tournament.
The Bravettes, 10-1-4, bounced back from Thursday's first-round loss to down Helena Capital 3-0 and C.M. Russell 3-1.
Flathead will now face Billings West today at 10 a.m.
The Flathead boys defeated Billings Skyview 3-2 in a loser-out match Friday, but were eliminated 1-0 in a shootout by Billings West. The Braves finished the season with a 9-6 record.
THE BRAVETTES had three different players - Ashley Younkin, Heidi Windauer and Megan O'Connell - score in the victory over Capital.
"We came out and just played really hard right from the start," said FHS coach Scott Warnell.
"We were able to put Capital back on their heels and kept them there for the rest of the game."
It marked the third time the Bravettes beat Capital this season.
Flathead spread the scoring around against CMR with O'Connell, Chelsea Shuman and Ally Krautbauer accounting for the three goals.
"A real hard-fought battle," said Warnell of the CMR match.
"They scored first, but we didn't let that get us down. We kept the pressure on. We were able to get two goals in the first half."
Flathead's attention now turns to West, a team it lost to 2-1 on Thursday in the first-round of tournament play.
"We're very excited to get another shot at West," said Warnell.
"We'll be very confident going into the game. We're playing very good soccer right now."

THE BRAVES stayed alive in state play by beating Skyview. Luke Fischer scored twice in the match, his final goal the game winner.,
"We started a little slow, a little sluggish," said FHS coach Eric Sawtelle.
"A great second half. We had lots of great passes and created some really good opportunities offensively."
Flathead and West battled to a scoreless time in regulation play and through two 10-minute overtime periods.
West beat the Braves in a shootout.
"A tough way to go," Sawtell said, "especially when we played as well as we did.
"It was hard to come back and play another game in the same day," he continued.
"We played a great game. It was an outing we feel like we did everything we could have done (to win it). We played intense, moved the ball well across the field. They had a solid defense. We had a hard time getting the ball in the back of the net."
West connected three times in the shootout to once for Flathead.
