Columbia Falls shuts out Livingston in Class A soccer

COLUMBIA FALLS - Late goals by Chase Jackson and Josh McNeil helped Columbia Falls ice Livingston 3-0 Friday in a nonconference boys' soccer matchup.

The Wildcats, now 2-1 overall, led 1-0 at the half on a penalty kick by DJ Stoneman. Stoneman also assisted on the two final goals.

"Livingston had the better (statistics), but they couldn't finish," Columbia Falls coach Peter Browne said.

"I feel we're really fortunate (to win this match). They have a nice team."

Jackson scored in the 71st minute and McNeil seven minutes later.

BILLINGS - Whitefish improved to 2-0 on the season with a nonconference victory over Billings Central.

The Bulldogs had 20 shots on goal to none for Billings Central.

It marked the second straight game WHS has not allowed a shot on goal.

"I've nver seen that before," said WHS coach O'Brien Byrd.

"I want to give full credit to our defense - Nik Ortman, Tyler Gardner and Jake Danczyk. They are playing real hard-nosed defense back there, allowing few if any chances at all."

LIBBY - Riley Hoyer notched a hat trick and the Loggers scored four goals in the second half to pull away in a nonconference match.

Kyle Berke assisted Hoyer's first goal as Libby (1-1) took the lead in the 25th minute. Hoyer scored two unassisted goals in the second half before Evan May struck on a header in the 65th minute and Berke scored in the 75th.

Cyrus Maloney assisted May's goal.

"It was just a good, fairly even-pitched game in the first half, but we felt we had the opportunities and the upper hand," Libby coach Mike Wickstrom said. "We just kind of took it apart from them in the second half."

COLUMBIA FALLS - Kassi Hebert scored four goals as the Wildkats claimed a nonconference match to remain undefeated.

Columbia Falls (3-0, 1-0) led 2-1 at halftime thanks to goals by Hebert and Kate Anderson. Hebert notched a second-half hat trick, giving her nine goals on the season.

Two of Hebert's goals were headers that stemmed from corner kicks, courtesy of Lindsey Henning assists.

Tyler Thompson and Ashili Fairbank logged second-half assists.

"The whole team played well," Columbia Falls coach Greg Trenerry said. "We had to step up. We have some injuries. It was actually a pretty close game. We got (two goals) right at the end of the game, and it was a pretty tight match, really."

LIBBY - Belgrade jumped out to a 5-0 lead in picking up a nonconference victory.

"We played a pretty good offensive team," said Libby coach Aaron Frohnmayher.

"We had some defensive breakdowns in the first half, but we recovered in the second half to play fairly even soccer."

Kalia Froster and Jamie Gilden scored for Libby, 1-1.

"It was OK," said WHS coach Lini Reading.

"After a long bus ride and pretty much a new team - we lost 12 seniors - we're starting over. We have a lot of talent, we just have to figure it out."

MISSOULA - Meghan O'Connell scored off an Ally Krautbauer assist as Flathead rallied to a season-opening Western AA tie.

Hellgate took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute before the Bravettes drew even in the 26th minute.

Flathead out-shot Hellgate 14-13 as Bravettes goalkeeper Danika Pietron tallied eight saves.

"I thought (the Bravettes) played really well, being the first game after three weeks of practice," Flathead coach Scott Warnell said. "The first game, you never know how things are going to shake out, and the girls came out, played with a lot of intensity and played hard against a good Hellgate team."
