An elderly Rollins man attempted to commit suicide Thursday afternoon by driving his golf cart into traffic on U.S. 93.

Fortunately, he crashed the cart into a bush before he could reach the highway.

The man, whose age is not known, suffered a number of minor cuts in the wreck and was transported to Kalispell Regional Medical Center, where he is undergoing a mental-health evaluation, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

He reportedly sat on Sunset Road in the golf cart for several minutes before speeding toward the highway.

Early reports that the man had a gun proved to be false. A relative had returned a gun to the man that morning, but he did not have it with him in the golf cart.

However, the possibility that the man was armed prevented medical personnel from approaching the golf cart before it took off and crashed.

After the crash, a family member stayed with him until medical help staged nearby arrived.

Investigators do not know why the man was attempting to kill himself.
