Glacier track teams off to a solid start

MISSOULA - Glacier High's first track meet is in the books.

The Wolfpack competed Friday in a triangular at Missoula Big Sky. Other schools participating were Big Sky and Great Falls High.

The fun part for both head girls' coach Jerry Boschee and head boys' coach Arie Grey is that all of Glacier's top performers now hold school records.

"We talked about that on the way down. That was pretty cool," Boschee said.

"It was kind of an eye-opener for some, but we had some really good performances," Boschee said.

And as far as wins and team point totals … the Wolfpack was solid there, too.

The Glacier girls won six events and scored 60 points. The boys also won six events and scored 49 1/2 points.

Freshman Heather Fraley won the 1,600 and 3,200, sophomore Leah Engebretsen won the long jump, Kayla Smart won the triple jump, freshman Halle Wilson won the 400 and the 400 relay team (Engebretsen, Kayla Smart, Nicole Hall and Maddy Frey) claimed victory.

Junior Emilee Hashley placed second in shot with a put of 37-4.

"Last year that would have won state," Boschee said.

Nicole Hall placed second in both the 100 and 200 behind Big Sky's Melissa Jenkins.

"For us to score 60 points shows we have a little bit of depth, but we have a long ways to go. Still, it was good for our young kids to get out of our own little world up there at Glacier," Boschee said.

Grey also saw a lot that he liked.

"We did well. I'm really happy," he said.

"We didn't run everybody full speed, but we did some good things there," he said.

The Wolfpack won the 400, 800, 1600, 3,200, the 1,600 relay and the triple jump.

Dan Burfeind won both the 800 and 1,600 - and put up personal best times in both.

"That was awesome," Grey said.

Other winners for the Glacier boys were Jake Glasman in the 400, Dan Howell in 3,200, Ben Cutler in triple jump and the 1600 relay team of George Werk, Taylor Hart, Kramer Wilson and Ben Cutler.

"I'm excited. The coachees are happy. We finally got on the track. Now we know where we're going to go, what we can do. The sky's the limit for us," Grey said.
