Glacier girls top Helena, Capital in tennis

MISSOULA - Laina Bates, Cami Mathison and Kayla Nelson were undefeated in singles play and helped Glacier go 2-1 on Saturday in matches with teams from Helena and Missoula.

Glacier downed Helena High 5-3, Helena Capital 5-3, but fell to Missoula Sentinel 5-3.

Bates and Mathison were 3-0 at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Nelson went 3-0 in matches at Nos. 3-4 singles.

"The girls definitely played tough," Glacier coach Josh Munro said.

"The long day wore on them by the end of the day, but it was a successful day."

Glacier's boys lost three times, all by 8-0 scores, to Helena, Capital and Sentinel.

"All the boys showed some improvement from Flathead," Munro said.

"We're going to continue to improve. We played three of the tougher boys' teams in the state today."

Glacier is back on the court Saturday at Missoula.

Libby - Whitefish breezed to an easy win in boys' action while the WHS girls pulled out a couple of big wins in singles and one in doubles to prevail.

Whitefish's Kate Klundt stopped Veronika Cislo 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 7-5 in a wild No. 2 singles match.

At No. 3 singles, McCara Cullen downed Libby's Audra Poppen 5-7, 7-5, 7-5.

Whitefish's Anne Miller and Courtney Wilder held off Libby's Katie Horelick and Cassi Moog at No. 3 doubles, 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 7-6 (7-4).

On Friday, Polson pulled out a tight 4-3 win in girls' play to sweep the Loggers in Libby.

Polson won 5-2 in boys' action.

Libby's girls won at Nos. 1-2-3 singles while the LHS boys won at No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles.
