Twelve teams at Kalispell Time Trials

It was cold and the sun was beginning to set, but Flathead senior Ally Krautbauer was not ready to call it a day.

"I want to keep going," she told Bill Epperly, her event coach. "I'm not done. I'm good."

Krautbauer was the lone high jumper left late Tuesday after nearly three hours of competition at Legends Stadium. The event began at 5 p.m. with 43 participants trying to clear 4-2.

Krautbauer was one of six jumpers to make 4-10, and one of only three to get over 5-0.

She was the first to clear 5-2 - and the only one. That won it for her.

She could have quit, but decided otherwise. She gave it three valiant tries at 5-4, coming oh, so close on her first attempt.

"Caught it with my heel," she told Epperly.

"Up until 5-4, I made every one on my first attempt," Krautbauer said.

Her performance was a very positive start to a season that has frustrated coaches and athletes alike with snow storms and low temperatures canceling two straight weekends of competition.

As a result, 12 schools turned up for the Kalispell Time Trials, which normally has a field of seven area schools. That made for a longer than usual meet.

Flathead coach Dan Hodge turned the lights on so the boys could finish the pole vault at 8:50 p.m. Ryan Kelley of Polson won it by making 12-0.

No team totals were kept.

Krautbauer's personal best in the high jump is 5-4, which she set her sophomore season. She finished second at state that year.

"It gave me something to build on," she said.

"It was a good first meet for me. I just hope I can keep improving."

Last year she struggled in the event, but she is glad that is all behind her now.

"I couldn't get my approach together," she said. "This year, I finally got it together."

"I've been working harder on the high jump. We've been having a lot of fun in practice, but taking it seriously, too."

Krautbauer competed in four events on the day. She started things off in the long jump by going 16-5, which was good for first place.

"It's a (personal best) for me - almost by a foot, actually," she said.

Krautbauer also posted a time of 28.57 seconds in the 200, which earned her a fifth place, and ran a leg on the 400 relay team, which finished third.

Flathead senior Luke Fischer and Glacier freshman Heather Fraley also had strong opening day efforts.

Fischer had the best throw in the javelin (184-8), while Fraley won the 800 (2:31.89) and placed second in the 1,600 (5:37.51).

"I'm happy with it, not excited," Fischer said of his performance.

"Finally (got to compete). I've been practicing it seems like forever."

Fischer, an all-state soccer player and state wrestling champion (171 pounds), is looking to close out his prep career as a state track champ. He's also set a goal of throwing the javelin 210 feet. The school record in that event is 192-4.

Fischer finished seventh at state last year.

"I'm just trying to stay healthy this year," he said.

"I'm not going to throw as hard in practice as I have in the past."

Fraley came very close to being a double winner on the day. Her final kick in the 1,600 came up five feet short of Whitefish's Lauren

Kuennen (5:36.86). Kuennen also won the 3,200 (12:18.65).

"I'm really happy to have this kind of competition," Fraley said. "They're all great runners."

Kayla Carlson of Bigfork was third, 5:43.03.

"I still have a lot of work to do," Fraley said. "A lot of training to get my times down."

Glacier's Emilee Hashley threw the shot put 38-6 1/2, which was a personal best by at least a foot. She also won the discus, 101-6.

The Flathead boys had eight firsts to lead the way. Whitefish had three firsts while Polson, Eureka and Libby had two apiece.

The Glacier girls finished with five firsts with Polson getting four. Whitefish and Flathead both had three and Columbia Falls two.

Polson's Merilee Mowbray took firsts in the 200 (27.25) and 400 (59.34).

Libby's Seth Wright and Whitefish's Drew Coco were the two double winners for the boys.

Wright took firsts in the high jump (6-4) and triple jump (42-10). Coco had the top times in the 1,600 (4:37.94) and 3,200 (10:05.81).
