Records fall at Bigfork Invitational

BIGFORK - Never change horses in midstream.

Pole vault poles in mid-competition… now that might be a different story.

That's exactly what Thompson Falls vaulter Brian Schenavar did during Saturday's Bigfork Invitational track meet.

Schenavar, who didn't enter the competition until it reached 12 feet, used his old pole on his first couple vaults.

"I could tell I was blowing it out. I went to my new pole and it felt really good today," he said.

It worked pretty well, too.

Schenavar blew past the old meet record with a vault of 14 feet. The old mark of 13 feet was set first in 2006 by R.C. Carter of Whitefish, then tied last year by Libby's Porter Nelson.

"It just felt really good. Today was the highest I've ever gone. It's definitely the best I've ever felt," Schenavar said.

The senior, who tied for second in Class B at last year's state meet, did go 14-1 last year. But he said he was higher over the bar Saturday than he ever has been before.

He's hoping for 15-6 before track season ends.

"It's kind of been my goal since I was a freshman," he said.

"I just need to keep working hard, perfect the top of my jump."

Those 10 points from Schenavar helped the Bluehawks slip past Libby in the team competition.

Thompson Falls scored 105 points, Libby, with a three-win effort by Seth Wright, was right behind with 98 points. Ronan was a distant third with 64 points.

Among the girls, Bigfork distance runner Kayla Carlson helped pace the Vals to an 84.3 effort. Florence was second with 73 points and Cut Bank scored 65 points.

Saturday's fair weather brought other record-breaking efforts, both of the personal and meet variety.

The girls broke 10 Bigfork Invitational records and boys broke six records.

Chief mark setter of the day was Wright.

Wright is now the proud owner of two new meet marks and the co-owner of a third. He long jumped 19-3 1/2, triple jumped 42-7 and high jumped 6-4.

"Seth seems to be off to a good start," said Libby coach Ed Tabis.

The 6-4 effort in the high jump matches Wright's effort at last Tuesday's Kalispell meet.

"He's got it. It's there," the coach said.

As for the rest of Libby's team?

"They're coming along. Lots of personal bests," Tabis said.

It was Carlson and Bigfork freshman Mallery Knoll who stood out among local girls.

Knoll set a new meet mark in the 100. She ran a 12.78 - just about two-tenths of a second faster than the old record. She was also second in both hurdle races.

As for Carlson, she carved eight seconds off her previous 1,600 time and blew away the field by nearly a minute in the 3,200 - in her first time ever running it.

The longest race Carlson ran last year was the 800.

"I wasn't very good at it," she said.

But Saturday "I felt well. It's kind of hard when you don't have anyone to push you, but I'm happy with my times and I look to get better," the sophomore said.

She gives credit for her distance running to Bigfork teacher Jessica Johnson.

They tried to get in as much as three to five miles per session four to five days a week throughout the winter.

"I went running and cross country skiing with Ms. Johnson," she said. "It's nice to have someone else there pushing you. It makes it more entertaining.

"I felt our team did extremely well. I feel we have a lot of quality," she added.
