Whitefish splits in softball

FRENCHTOWN - The day ended on a good note for Whitefish's softball team.

Torey Ost slammed her first home run of the season in the first inning and Desiree Clarke homered in the first and fourth innings as Whitefish cruised to a 16-6 victory over Florence at the Frenchtown Invitational.

All three home runs cleared the 200-foot, left-center field fence.

It was Clarke's first HRs of the season.

"We settled down a little bit, we were patient, we waited for our pitches and hit the ball," said Whitefish coach David Dachs.

It was that easy.

Clarke went 4-for-4 in that outing along with Adele FauntLeRoy. Whitefish had 11 hits.

Whitefish opened two-day tournament play by falling to Frenchtown 13-3.

Devyn Ost homered to straightaway center for Whitefish in the second inning with one runner aboard. It was her third of the season.

Hailey Mortensen doubled to lead the inning off.

Taylor Ybarra-Brunty followed Ost with a triple and scored on an infield ground out.

Whitefish had just four hits compared to Frenchtown's 17.

"We didn't play bad against Frenchtown," Dachs said.

"It's tough to defend hits. That's what they had. They had hits."

Whitefish (4-6) plays Anaconda at 10 a.m. and Ronan at 4 p.m. today.
