| December 3, 2008 1:00 AM

James E. "Jim" Herron, 78, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at his residence in Kalispell, after a 14-year battle with cancer. He was born on July 2, 1930, in Redfield, S.D., to John L. and Stella Mae (Walter) Herron.

When he was a young boy, he lived in South Dakota and would come to Montana to visit his Uncle Ivan and Uncle Jim. He also spent time on his Uncle Frank's farm.

Jim joined the Army in 1947 and was honorably discharged in 1951.

In 1959, he graduated from barber school and eventually had his own shop.

In 1969, he went to work for Ford Motor Co. until moving to Montana to raise his family and had lived here ever since.

He was a thoughtful and kind man and would never say no to anyone needing help. He was an avid outdoorsman. His favorite things to do were family gatherings, sledding with his grandkids, working with wood and fishing.

Dancing was another of his loves. He and his wife Theresa loved dancing. He was a member of the square dancing association and Arie Eagles. In recent years, he took up carving, which he shared with his family and friends. They will be treasured by all.

Jim never knew a stranger. It was a toss-up who played harder - Jim or the grandkids!

In 1963, Jim married Margaret Neary. In that union, they had three children who were the loves of his life. They later divorced. In 2000, he married his soulmate, Theresa Mann.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Raymond; a granddaughter; and numerous aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his loving wife, Theresa Ann, of Kalispell; daughters, Theresa Brim and husband, Dave, of Kalispell, Cathy Lammert and husband, Bill, of Kalispell, and Peggy Johnson and husband, Denis, of Kalispell, Anita Smith and husband, Trey, of Scarborough, Maine, and Lisa Katchur and husband, Mike, of Lakeside; his grandchildren, Christopher and Thomas Brim, Shayla and Zachary Lammert, Wesley, Katelyn, Daniel, Megan and Sarah Johnson, Jonathan Marcus and Eryn Edelen, and Tarah and Elijah Katchur; great-grandchildren, Daniel, Kieren, Joshua and Levi Edelen; sister, Juanita Rahn, and her husband, Harry, of Lincoln, Mich.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and adopted family.

Memorial services for Jim will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, in the Cowboy Church on Highway 93 N., with Pastor Paul Arends officiating. Urn burial will be at 1 p.m. in the C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery, with military honors by the United Veterans of the Flathead.
