A Kalispell-area man was arrested Monday after allegedly hitting a man with a wooden bat and then trying to strike a second man with his vehicle during an altercation in the parking lot of an Evergreen store.

Henry Francis Garceau, 21, was being held Tuesday in the Flathead County Detention Center on suspicion of felony assault with a weapon, pending formal charges from the Flathead County Attorney's Office.

Flathead County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of a fight outside Kmart at the intersection of U.S. 2 and Montana 35 about 11:15 a.m. Monday.

The altercation broke out when Garceau, who reportedly was selling firewood in the parking lot, was approached by two men in their early 20s, according to Flathead County Sheriff Mike Meehan.

Garceau allegedly hit one of the men with a wooden bat he called a "tire thumper" and tried to strike the second man with his vehicle, Meehan said.

Garceau and his alleged victims reportedly knew each other. The men involved were questioned and gave conflicting statements about what occurred and what prompted the altercation, Meehan said.

Garceau, a former resident of Florida, also was involved in an August fight that left two people with minor injuries. That altercation, which occurred on the way to an Evergreen bar, is reported to have involved a knife.
