Glacier, Flathead grapplers end strong

BUTTE - A good ending.

Both the Flathead and Glacier wrestling teams came away from the weekend's Mining City Duals with good tastes in their mouths.

The Wolfpack bounced back from an 0-3 day on Friday to win both its Saturday duals.

Glacier defeated Anaconda, 60-24, and Billings West, 48-40.

The Braves dropped a close morning dual against Billings Skyview, 36-30, but rebounded with wins over Colstrip, 57-15, and Great Falls High, 59-15.

Havre is the 2008 Mining City Duals champion. It defeated Skyview 39-36 in the championship. Great Falls Russell edged Bozeman, 42-39, for third place.

"I thought we had our best dual of the year against Anaconda," said Glacier coach Mark Fischer.

"We won every match but two and (the Wolfpack) really came out and wrestled with aggression. It was fun to watch."

The Wolfpack team members weren't happy they were fourth in their pool after Friday's duals.

Their second-day opponents were both third-place pool finishers.

"We beat both of them. (The Wolfpack) didn't want to be remembered as the team that got fourth. It gave them a little bit of a spark," Fischer said.

"It hurt a little bit yesterday. But they responded well. Today, these kids had fun. They went at it. It was exciting to watch," he said.

Larry Francis and John Frandzen both wrapped up 5-0 weekends and Fischer also had compliments for Matt Cope.

Cope was going to weigh-in Saturday at 152, but the coaches instead decided to have him go at 171.

Cope gave up 20 pounds to Anaconda's Colten Scholler, but he won, 9-7.

"I thought he was the toughest kid in their lineup," Fischer said of Scholler.

"I think (Cope) just outhearted the kid. It was a real tight match the whole way. I was really proud of him, he was wrestling up so much."

As for the Braves, they also saw some positives from the second day.

"We lost a close one in the morning, but we rebounded pretty well," said Flathead coach Matt Owen.

"If one match would have gone our way … and we had quite a few close ones," he said.

"I thought the kids bounced back really well. It was a hard loss in the morning. It was a hard-fought match. It was a little bit of a letdown. But it will keep the kids hungry. There are some positives that will come out.

"The great thing about this, we see the areas we need to work on. This will keep the kids hungry. We were in every dual. One match against Bozeman, one match against Skyview, we were right in there.

"I think it was a positive weekend. I think the losses were hard on the kids, but they bounced back great."

Owen complimented the efforts of Ryan Swelland (112), Bryce Stacy (160) and Tanner Beaman (135).

In the Great Falls dual, Swelland defeated Dylan Mendenhall, the 2008 Class AA 98-pound champion.

"It was a good match. (Swelland) got a takedown right on the edge of the mat at the end of the second period," Owen said.

"Bryce (Stacy) had another great day," he added.

Stacy finished the weekend 6-0, with five pins and one forfeit.

"He never lets anything frustrate him out there. He stays calm, stays patient and keeps working," he said.

"And I thought Tanner Beaman kept wrestling well today," Owen added.

Flathead and Glacier will both send wrestlers to Coeur d'Alene next weekend for the 37th annual Tri-State Tournament.

Flathead, the defending champion, will send a full team. The Wolfpack, as a first-year entrant, will send six wrestlers.

The rest of the Glacier team, and some members of the Flathead team, will travel to Eureka for the Buzz Lucey tournament.
