Glacier's Frandsen wins individual mat title

GREAT FALLS John Frandsen put his name in the Glacier High School record books on Saturday.
The Wolfpack's 215-pound wrestler became the first champion of any tournament in Glacier High School history with a 3-0 win over Havre's Paul Jensen at the Great Falls CMR Holiday Classic.
Frandsen started down in the second period, got an escape, then took Jensen down as time ran out in the period.
"I'm very proud of him. John established himself as one of the top wrestlers in the state this weekend," said Glacier coach Mark Fischer.
"I just want to say I could not be more happy with what happened here. We wrestled way beyond what I felt we were going to do. We just had an outstanding first day, an amazing first day," he said.
"The kids wrestled with so much heart. I just really think they took a step out there and really improved," the coach said.
As a team, Glacier scored 138 points and finished seventh of about 40 teams.
All Montana's Class AA schools except Flathead, Missoula Sentinel and Billings Skyview were at this tournament.
As a comparison, the Wolfpack scored 48 points at this tournament last year.
"That kind of shows you the improvement these kids have made over last year. I think that's pretty amazing for our program."
The Wolfpack had four other placers in addition to Frandsen.
They were Zach Barber, fourth at 98 pounds, Shane St. Onge, sixth at 135, Lucas Cummings, sixth at 145 and Larry Francis, fifth at 152.
The Wolfpack is off until Jan. 3 when it plays host to Northwestern A Libby, Whitefish and Columbia Falls.
