Glacier's Day picks up 30th win on season

The forecast for Glacier's inaugural wrestling season was stormy at best.

But a 125-pound freshman has provided the Wolfpack with a very sunny outlook on a steady basis.

Stormy Day picked up his 30th win on the season Tuesday, pinning Missoula Sentinel's Nick Wills in 35 seconds in the Glacier gym.

"He's had a very good season," Glacier coach Mark Fischer said. "For a freshman to have 30 wins at this point, that's huge. You don't see that very often, especially at 125."

It was the 22nd pin for Day, who also came into the match leading the Wolfpack in team points, 153, and takedowns, 49. He added to both of those totals as well.

Day was just one of two Glacier wrestlers to pick up a win on what proved to be a very long night for the Wolfpack. Sophomore Sam Overton, at 112, provided the other highlight, as he dominated Sentinel's David Marne, 9-1.

It was all Sentinel before and after that as the Spartans cruised to a 65-10 dual victory.

Sentinel won 10 of the 12 matches and added 18 easy points off three Glacier forfeits at 105, 160 and 171.

Sentinel pinned its way off the mats with falls at 189, 215 and heavyweight. The Spartans also had a pin at 119 to go with two technical falls, 98 and 145, one major decision, 140, and three decisions, 130, 135 and 152.

The Spartans scored the final 38 points of the match.

"They're a good team, probably the No. 2 (team) in Western AA for sure," Fischer said.

Fischer was also upbeat with the showing turned in by Overton.

"He had a very good week," Fischer said. "He's starting to realize he can wrestle with the tough kids. Last week he had a very good match against a Polson kid."

Clayton Hamilton, a junior, came close to halting Sentinel's victory run at 152 pounds, but was decisioned 16-10 by Eli Kindered. The outcome was in doubt until the final 12 seconds.

"He's been very close a lot of different nights," Fischer said. "I think he's frustrated right now … he's so close and can't seem to pull it out."

But when he does, Fischer says Hamilton's confidence will only grow.

Glacier's Jordan Nelson, 130, lost a tough 7-5 decision as did Brayden Bagley, 9-3, at 135.

Glacier is back in business against the No. 1 team in the state on Thursday with a dual at Flathead at 7 p.m. Flathead is undefeated and nationally ranked.
