Glacier's Bates picks up another singles title at Flathead Invite
The tennis resume for Glacier's Liana Bates is starting to gain some substance.
The freshman singles standout emerged with her second straight individual title on Saturday at the Flathead Invitational.
Bates defeated Whitefish's Brielle Menegazzi 6-3, 6-0 in the final at Flathead Valley Community College.
Last week Bates won the Missoula Invitational.
"I'm feeling good going into divisionals," Bates said after her latest triumph.
"I'd say (I'm playing) pretty close to my best (right now)."
Divisional play starts Thursday in Kalispell with state to follow.
Bates trailed Menegazzi just once, down 0-1.
"I don't start well, so it was OK," she said.
And it was nothing to worry about.
"My forehand was good and my backhand was good," Bates said.
"My volleys were really good today."
Bates and Menegazzi met in the semifinals last week with Bates winning that pro-set match 8-5.
"She maybe tried to keep it in more than last time," Bates said.
"I adjusted."
Bates said her serve still needs some attention.
"It was OK, not great," she said.
"It got me through."
Bates had a first-round bye, then defeated Izzy Makman of Flathead 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals.
Bates has lost just once this spring in singles play and in doubles.
"She played great today," Glacier coach Josh Munro said.
"Looking stronger every match. She improved on some scores from last week when she had some closer (ones)."
In boys' No. 1 singles, Renzo Caimi of Whitefish rolled over Flathead's Wes Mathison 6-0, 6-0 in the final.
"He was very happy to get a chance to play somebody of that caliber," FHS coach Buck Measure said of Mathison facing Caimi.
"He's had two matches against Renzo. He felt very positive about the experience."
