FHS, Glacier AA track leaders

Highly motivated.

That's a good way to describe the long jump performance of Flathead senior Ally Krautbauer on Friday afternoon.

Krautbauer, fresh off a disappointing run in the 400 relay, used that frustration to win the Western AA divisional long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 7 inches.

"Our relay didn't have the best time nor place. I just kind of used it for the long jump. And it worked," she said.

Krautbauer had the lead almost from her first effort. She went into the finals with a leap of 15-10, then built steadily on that mark.

Her first jump in the finals was 16-5, followed by 16-7 and then 16-6.

"She had three that were all real close in finals. She had a great series, not just one fluke jump," said Bravettes coach Kirtlye Lohof.

Then it was nail-biting time as three other athletes were busy competing in other events. Krautbauer had to standby while they each took their turns.

"I was really nervous about Bobbi (Furrer of Hellgate) because she's jumped 17 before. I was a little scared," Krautbauer admitted.

But when all was said and done, Krautbauer claimed the title and Glacier's Maddy Frey took second with a jump of 15-10 1/4.

Frey's place was a bit of a surprise, but not nearly as big of a surprise as the Glacier girls' team.

After the first day of competition - with seven events completed - the Glacier girls are in first place with 56 points.

Pre-meet favorite Missoula Big Sky is second with 45 and Missoula Sentinel is third at 36, followed by Hellgate with 34, Helena with 32, Flathead with 26 and Helena Capital with 19.

Not such a surprise are the Flathead boys, also in first place.

The Braves have 58 points. Big Sky is second with 54.5, Helena Capital has 46, Helena High has 31, Sentinel 25, Hellgate 18.5 and Glacier 12.

Today's events begin at 10 a.m. with the boys' pole vault. The first track event is 10:30. That will be a runoff between the Glacier and Sentinel 400 relay teams.

"I think we're surprising ourselves a bit," said Glacier girls' coach Jerry Boschee. "We're sitting pretty good. This is fun," he said with a huge grin.

"Once they look in the paper, I think they're really going to be surprised (by their times and distances)," he added.

Emilee Hashley led the Wolfpack effort with wins in both shot put (39-7) and javelin (125-0).

"Emilee Hashley - her order for the day was have fun. I think she's having a lot of fun," Boschee laughed.

"Between her and (Heather) Fraley, they're carrying us pretty well right now," he added.

Fraley won the 3,200 and was third in the 800.

And today?

"Big Sky is going to come back. Big Sky and Hellgate are really going to come back," Boschee said.

"It could come down to the end. We'll see what happens. All of us have kids in every event."

Flathead's girls are sixth after the first day.

"We got a couple girls on the bus today to state - and that was good," Lohof said.

"We asked them to have their best meet of the season and a lot of them did today," she added.

"You always hope for a few more points, but we couldn't have asked for much more out of the girls. They perfomed well today."

As for the Flathead boys, head coach Dan Hodge was keeping everything in perspective.

"We've still got another day. A lot can happen between Friday and Saturday," he said. "It depends on how well the kids recover. It was hot out there today. I think it affected some of the kids. But we are where I thought we'd be … first, second, third."

But what did impress Hodge is the number of personal-best marks.

"My javelin throwers had personal bests, my shot putters had personal bests. My 400 relay had a season best," he said.

In fact, the 400 relay team (Sam Tedrow, Mike Kozlowski, Ian Damon and Charlie Dotson) were the first of the day to qualify for state.

"We had our fastest time by a few tenths. We all three had good handoffs, finally," Tedrow said.

"It just clicked. Hopefully, we can carry that momentum to state," he added.

"I just saw everybody's handoffs looked pretty good," Dotson said. "Mike caught his guy pretty fast and Ian just spread (the lead). There wasn't much to do after that. Just keep the lead," he smiled.

"Our handoffs were pretty good," Kozlowski said. "My handoff with the third leg, Ian … I caught him pretty fast, little bit more work to do on that," he said.
