Whitefish boys, Polson girls both second at state track

BOZEMAN- The Whitefish Bulldogs have three state champions after the first day of the Class A state track meet at Bozeman High.

Colt Idol turned in a season-best 6-foot, 8 1/4 inches to blow away the competition in the high jump and Aaron Tkachyk won the long jump at 21-8. For the girls, Ashley Ferda is the state javelin champion with a throw of 125-3.

The Whitefish boys are currently second as a team with 31 points. Lewistown leads at 33.5, Laurel is third with 28 points and Libby has 22 points. Polson has six points and Bigfork has two.

Zack Rowan of Libby also won the state championship in the 400 with a time of 49.55.

Others who placed are Whitefish's Drew Coco, second in the 3,200 (9:57.22) Polson's Logan Torgison, third in the 800 (1:57.62), Seth Wright of Libby, third in high jump (6-2) and third in long jump (21-2), Bigfork's Roland Benedict, fifth in long jump (20-8 1/2), Whitefish's Kevin McDowell, fifth in shot (46-7), and Willie Roche of Whitefish, sixth in long jump (20-8 1/4).

On the girls' side, Belgrade has a slim lead over Polson, 22-21 after six events. Frenchtown is third with 20 points, and Miles City and Lewistown are fourth with 18 each, and Whitefish has 16 points. Columbia Falls has five points, Libby four, Bigfork four, and Ronan one.

Placers among the girls were Polson's Nicole Davey, second in 400 (58.88) and Brianne Kelley, sixth (1:01.03), Lauren Kuennen of Whitefish, third in 1,600 (5:21), Kayla Carlson of Bigfork, fourth in 1,600 (5:21.87), Emily Stoltz of Columbia Falls, third in high jump (5-0), Sadie McMillan of Ronan, sixth in high jump (5-0), Christa Redcrow of Polson, third in long jump (15-8), Columbia Falls' Jylisa Fields, sixth in long jump (15-3 1/2), Stephany Kluver of Libby, fourth in javelin (119-3), Loni Havlovick of Polson, fourth in shot (35-7), and Natasha Lafferty of Polson, fifth in shot (34-2).
