A 58-year-old man was killed Friday when his motorcycle ran off a private road north of Kalispell.

The man, whose name has not been released, was riding a small Honda scooter at about 7 a.m. when he went off the road and crashed, according to Montana Highway Patrol trooper Rick Mehring.

Investigators don't know what caused the man to veer off the road, but excessive speed was not a factor, Mehring said.

An employee of road construction contractor LHC Inc., the man was on the company's property in the 1100 block of Stillwater Road when the crash occurred.

He was taken by ambulance to Kalispell Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The Kalispell Fire Department, West Valley Fire Department and Montana Highway Patrol responded to the crash.

Five people have died this year in crashes on Flathead County roads.

Three of those fatal crashes have involved motorcycles. In 2007, there were 26 traffic fatalities in Flathead County.
