Wolfpack boys fall to Helena; Frey leads Glacier past Bengals

It was just one of those days for the Glacier boys soccer team Thursday.

The Wolfpack moved the ball well and created a number of scoring opportunities, but couldn't catch a break in a 5-1 home loss to Helena High.

"It's ironic," Glacier coach Ryan O'Rourke said. "We did some things very well today. We moved the ball better than we have in any other game. It just seemed like one of those days where every time we broke down, they put it in the net."

Helena scored in the first five minutes, but Glacier answered with a goal by Jared Rice, assisted by Evan McLellan. But after that, Glacier's offense cooled off.

"We just couldn't get it in the net," O'Rourke said.

Glacier goalie Kasey Haugan had his hands full and made seven saves.

The Wolfpack (3-4-1) travels to Helena today to face Capital.

Glacier's Maddie Frey scored two goals as the Wolfpack defeated the visiting Bengals.

"The second half we played real well," Glacier coach Paul Holmgren said. "We connected our passes and distributed the ball really well."

Frey scored her first goal thanks to a combination of passes that zipped through Helena's defense. Teammate Skylar St. Onge fed the ball to Frey, who beat Helena's goalie for the score.

Later in the half, Glacier's Courtney Porch booted a shot off the goal post and Frey took the rebound and scored.

"Helena is a tough team," Holmgren said. "They kept coming and we were able to slow them down."

Glacier started the season 1-4-1, but has won two in a row. It plays at Helena Capital today.
