Whitefish boys romp to state title

Bulldogs take Class A golf crown by 30 strokes
POLSON - The Whitefish boys didn't just win another state championship in golf on Saturday, they did it in style.
The Bulldogs won the team title by a whopping 30 strokes as four individuals - Reed Platke, Daniel Markus, Joel Mallams and Ryan Zalucky - finished in the top eight in individual play.
Whitefish finished with a 623 total. Billings Central was a distant second, 653. Livingston and Hamilton tied for third with 694 scores.
"That's a pretty comfortable margin," Whitefish coach Terry Nelson said.
"Two good days, two solid days under less than ideal (weather) conditions."
Whitefish led by 20 strokes after Friday's play with a 312 total. The Bulldogs shot 311 on Saturday.
"It felt warmer (Saturday), but it was still windy," Nelson said.
"Probably 45 (degrees)."
Whitefish has won a total of eight state championships under Nelson and 11 in school history.
The Bulldogs have won state four of the last five years. They finished second in 2007.
Platke, 76-76-152, finished second in the medalist race behind Preston Matchett, 80-71-151, of Billings Central. Platke was the first-day leader.
Markus, 78-79-157, and Mallams, 78-79-157, tied for fourth. Zalucky, 85-77-162, was eighth.
Whitefish's Zach Maassen, 80-85-165, finished 11th. Polson's Tyler Engebretson, 82-84-166, and Bigfork's Kyle Parker, 81-86-167, were 12th, and 13th, respectively.
Bigfork, 732, was eighth in the final standings and Polson, 735, ninth.
The top 15 individuals earn all-state honors.
Billings Central won the girls title, shooting a 713 score for two days. Whitefish, the defending champions, wound up second, 722. Polson finished third, 732.
"The girls played way better today," Nelson said.
"They went from 370 to 352. They made a great run at it. Billings Central played extremely well."
Katelyn Frank of Sidney was a wire-to-wire winner in medalist play, 79-81-160.
Whitefish's BreAnna Cameron, 87-82-169, and Polson's Julia DiGiallonardo, 86-83-169, tied with two other players for second.
Whitefish's Kiley McConnell, 91-85-176, wound up eighth, and Quinn Micklewright, 95-86-181, finished 11th.
"I think we did really well," Nelson said of the girls
"I was proud. Quinn and BreAnna both had 39s on the front today. Kiley had a 40 on the back. They played really well. It was still really windy. Those are great scores."
Libby's Jackie Mee, 82-91-173, finished seventh. Polson's Natalia Arlint, 93-90-183, tied for 12th.
