Big Sky girls bump Flathead

MISSOULA - Flathead scored first, but Missoula Big Sky followed with two goals in the final half for a 2-1 Western AA girls' soccer victory on Thursday.

Chelsea Shuman scored at 40 minutes, giving Flathead a 1-0 lead at the half. Kassie Hebert assisted on the goal.

Big Sky answered 18 minutes later on a goal by Stephanie Carl to tie it. Sierra Smith then knocked home the game-winner at 78 minutes.

"They outplayed us today," Flathead coach Scott Warnell said.

"We had a good effort, we just had a problem connecting passes.

"Defensively, we played fairly well," he continued.

"We only allowed two goals with (Big Sky taking) 19 shots."

Flathead keeper Karli Kusler had 17 saves.

Flathead could muster just nine shots on goal. Big Sky had five corner kicks to Flathead's four.

Flathead (1-1-1) hosts Helena High on Saturday, 3 p.m.

Cameron Clevidence scored twice as the Braves collected their first victory on the season. It was also Clevidence's first goals for 2008.

"Pretty dominating," Flathead coach Chris Putzler said of his squad's performance.

"We did a good job of maintaining possession. It's something we worked on all week."

Joaquin Calderon and Bobby Schreiner assisted on the goals.

Putzler said center-mids Kyle Dixon and Jerrad Merril "did a good job of controlling the center of the field, and distributing the ball."

Flathead (1-2) hosts Helena High on Saturday, 1 p.m.
