MISSOULA - Drew Coco pulled away in the later stages to win the Mountain West Classic cross country race on Saturday at the University of Montana Golf Course.

Coco covered the 3-mile distance in 15 minutes, seven seconds.

"He won it by nine seconds," Whitefish coach Bill Brist said.

"He kind of came in by himself."

Allan Schroeder of Mount Spokane finished second, 15:16 with Ryan Ketterling of Joliet third, 15:17.

Fifteen runners broke 16 minutes.

"In the third mile, he put the hammer down," Brist said of Coco.

"He pulled away from the other two runners."

Coco, a senior, is 4-0 in cross country runs this fall. He finished 13th at this event last year, 15:50.37.

Gonzaga Prep, 89, won the boys titles and was the only school to finish under the 100-point barrier. University High of Spokane was second, 103.

Flathead, 388, finished 12th and Glacier, 465, 13th.

Leif Castren, 15:57, finished 15th for Flathead, while Dan Howell, 16:24, was Glacier's top finisher, coming in 32nd.

Whitefish, 1,064, was well down the line in the team standings.

The Whitefish girls placed third, led by Jackie Cassidy, 26th in 19:20, and Stella Holt, 29th in 19:23.

"I thought we had a great race last year when we placed seventh here," Brist said.

"So you can see I'm pretty excited about our placing this year."

Brist said Cassidy, a sophomore, "has been kind of showing us that she has the capability the last couple of meets. She put one together today."

Brist said Holt had an outstanding race.

"She went out and led us from a mile and a half on," he said.

"That's the best race she's ever run."

Bozeman, 99, took the team title with Mead High, 140, of Spokane second. Whitefish was next at 188. Billings West, also with 188, finished fourth.

"I thought if we had the perfect day, we might sneak into third," Brist said.

"We didn't have a perfect day and still snuck in there, even though our No. 1 runner did not have her best day. We were still strong enough as a team to place in the top three."

Baylee Mires of Mead won the girls title, posting a time of 17:27.30. Keli Dennehy of Butte was second, 17:27.60.

Four runners broke 18 minutes.

Heather Fraley of Glacier was sixth, 18:16, and Kayla Carlson of Bigfork placed ninth, 18:37.

"Excellent race, a real strong showing," Glacier coach Mike McLean said of Fraley.

"We're really happy with that."

Flathead, 487, finished 16th and Glacier, 511, 19th.

Rose Byrne, 49th in 20:01, was Flathead's top runner.

McLean said Rachael Hart, 56th in 20:11, and Makayla Mitchell, 71st in 20:22, "both ran personal best (times)."

He said Howell also had a PB.

Glacier's Mark Fallon was 56th, 16:42, and Dan Burfeind was 106th, 17:11.

"He's just coming back from an illness," McLean said of Burfeind.

"I didn't expect him to be this far along at this time."

Columbia Falls coach Steve Gasche was very pleased with the showing of his boys. The Wildcats were led by Shawn Whitman, who finished 76th in 16:53

"The boys team finished 22nd overall, which doesn't sound very remarkable, but when you look at the 17 Class A schools that were here, we ended up fourth," he said.

"It looks like our boys will be a contender this year for one of the spots in the state championship."

Gasche said seven of his top eight boys ran season best times. That included Whitman.

Gasche ran his girls in the JV race, where they finished fourth in the team standings.

Leesa Benner, a freshman, was sixth, 20:55.48.

Gasche said he had PBs from six of his top seven girls.

Flathead coach Paul Jorgensen said his boys and girls squads were shorthanded for this event.

"We have a much better team than what we've shown so far this season," he said.

"Illness and injury have devastated our team the last couple of weeks. We left 13 kids home. We weren't running with our normal varsity squads. If we can ever get over that, we'll have a lot more competitive team than what we have shown so far."
