Jack Wilson Muir, 93

Jack Wilson Muir, 93, of Butte, died on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at home with his wife of 70 years, Irene, at his side. He was born in Great Falls on Feb. 8, 1917, to Scottish immigrants, John and Mary Muir. He was proud of his Scottish heritage. Jack was an avid supporter of the Boy Scouts, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended local schools where he met his future wife, Irene Janetski. Both members of the Great Falls High School Band, they graduated in 1935. He attended the University of Montana and after three years transferred to the University of Oregon, where he graduated with a degree in accounting. After graduating from college, he attended the Thomas J. Watson School in Endicott, N.Y., which taught young executives to change old accounting systems into the new computer systems. He then went to work for the Anaconda Company in Great Falls as an accountant. On Dec. 7, 1940, he married his sweetheart, Irene. ACM then transferred him to their mine in Chuquicamata, Chile, where he set up their accounting system. Irene gave birth to their first daughter, Linda, in Chile. They lived there for five years. They returned to Great Falls where their two sons, Jack Jr., and Daniel, and daughter, Maryanne, were born. Jack continued to work for the ACM and was subsequently transferred to Butte in 1968, where he was a data processing supervisor. He retired from the company in 1979 after 40 years of service. Jack was a lifetime golfer, winning several tournaments over the years. He had many golfing friends and golfed into his late 80s. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Hugh. Jack is survived by his loving wife, Irene; his brother, Bob, and wife, Barbara, of Billings; daughter, Linda Coolidge, and Del, of Whitefish; son, Jack Jr., and wife, Sydney, of Lakeside; son, Daniel, and wife, Coreena, of Kalispell; and daughter, Maryanne, of New Jersey. Other survivors include six grandchildren, Brian Oelberg, Laura Wilson and family, Jennifer Muir Braunstein, Jeremy Muir and family, Justin Muir and family, and Jason Muir; five stepgrandchildren, Cody Bras, Lea Coolidge Gabriel, Evan Coolidge, Melanie and Melissa Taylor, nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Jack was much loved by his children and grandchildren for his ready wit and keen sense of humor. They enjoyed his funny songs and stories. Cremation has taken place in Butte. Liturgy of the Resurrection will be celebrated for Jack at 11 a.m. Friday, April 16, at St. Ann's Catholic Church. Interment will take place in Great Falls at a later date.
