A hiker found the body of a man along a hiking trail in Lone Pine State Park on Monday afternoon.

The death appeared to have been from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Flathead County Sheriff Mike Meehan.

Authorities are not releasing the name of the Kalispell man, who appears to be in his 30s, pending notification of family members.

Meehan said there appeared to be no criminal activity at the scene and authorities believe the death to be a suicide.

The man’s body had been lying along the trail about halfway up the mountain for about six to eight hours before he was found around 4:30 p.m. Monday, Meehan said.

The ALERT helicopter assisted in transporting the body to a landing zone. From there the body was taken to a funeral home.
