POLSON — Freshman Shay Duford struck out eight Hamilton batters, gave up four hits and walked two as the Polson Pirates overcame six errors to defeat the visiting Broncs 6-1 in a nonconference softball matchup on Thursday.

Senior shortstop Staci Benson was 2-for-4 with a triple on the day.

“I thought pitching was great,” said Polson coach Larry Smith.

“(Duford) really did well with all those errors,” he said.

The Pirates (3-0, 1-0) were up 2-1 going to the bottom of the fifth inning.

Benson led off with the triple. Junior Kodi Woods, 2-for-4, bunted to score Benson. Polson picked up two more runs on three singles to finish the Broncs.

The Pirates are at Ronan on Tuesday.
