High marks for local athletes in track

The track season is about to finally take off.

After a full month of practicing and with state meets only six weeks away, teams are ready to put poor weather conditions behind them and finally compete.

Today the Bigfork Invitational is hosting 18 schools starting at 9 a.m. A meet in Missoula is taking place as well.

A number of local athletes have already turned in impressive marks, including a few local state champions.

Glacier senior Maddey Frey has the top time in AA in the 100. She holds the second best long jump as well. Teammate Lexy Boschee leads AA in the high jump.

Glacier’s reigning state champion girls 400 relay team, which had two new spots open this season due to graduating members, has barely missed a step and owns the third fastest time in the state. They sit less than one second behind the top time.

In the AA ranks, the state qualifying standards are in place again. The marks are the same as last year’s. Athletes that surpass their event’s standard are ensured a spot at the state meet in Great Falls.

Flathead senior Leif Castren, who finished second in the 1,600 and third in the 3,200 last year, currently holds the state’s fastest 1,600 time and the second fastest 3,200 time in AA.

Glacier’s Shane Freese holds the top high jump mark in AA and the second best mark in the long jump. Freese was the state runner-up in the high jump last year.

Columbia Falls’ Derrick Williams ran the fastest 800 in Class A last weekend at the Columbia Falls Invitational.

At the same meet, Polson’s Jason Bowman turned in Class A’s top 200 time and the second fastest in the 100.

Tess Brenneman, a sophomore at Flathead, has the best long jump in the state. Teammate Rose Byrne has the state’s fastest 400 so far.

Bigfork is making a strong showing in Class B thanks in part to a pair of strong upperclassmen, sprinter Mallery Knoll and distance runner Kayla Carlson. Carlson won the 3,200 at the Class A state meet last year, was runner-up in the 800 and took third in the 1,600. This season after one meet, she has the top 800 time in Class B and the second best time in the state in the 1,600. Knoll, a junior who took third in the 100 and 300 hurdles at state last year, is currently tops in Class B in those same events.
