Glacier's Bates knocks off Braun

MISSOULA - Glacier's Kellen Bates beat two-time defending Class AA state champion Eric Braun of Missoula Hellgate 6-2-6-4 on Saturday in dual action.

It was the first time the two players had faced off in two years. The match was delayed in the second set 1 1/2 hours by rain with the score tied at 1-1.

"That was a big win to start the day," Glacier coach Josh Munro said.

"He (Bates) had a couple double faults in the first game, but really he just played the steadier match. He was the aggressor and took it to the senior."

Hellgate won the dual 7-1.

"It was a great day overall," Munro said. "Another very strong day on the girls side from Liana (Bates), Hailey (Blalack), Veronica (Walton) and Cami (Mathison). All of them were undefeated."

MISSOULA - The Flathead boys tennis team used wins at Nos. 2-4 singles and 1-2-4 doubles to drop Missoula Big Sky 5-3 in Saturday Class AA tennis dual action.

That turned out to be the highpoint of the day as the Braves lost to Hellgate and Sentinel by 8-0 scores, while the Flathead girls lost to Big Sky 8-0, Hellgate 7-1 and Sentinel 5-3.
