Whitefish senior Cole Havens makes his way around the track during the 800 on Tuesday. Havens placed sixth with a time of 2:20 at Glacier High School.

As Glacier track coach Jerry Boschee put it, there were small successes and big noticeable ones at the Glacier-Whitefish dual track meet on Tuesday.

Maddey Frey was certainly one of the noticeable ones.

The senior standout went from leaping 18 feet, 1/2 inch in the long jump pit to racing down the track in the 200 dash in one of the fastest times in the state, 26.39. Both instances were school records and qualified Frey for the state meet via the AA qualifying standards.

"Those were two of my goals, qualify in the 200 and make 18 in the long jump. Now I just gotta keep going to the next step and keep going further and faster," Frey said.

Both schools tuned up at the sunburst non-scoring meet as the heart of track season approaches. Besides Frey, Glacier had four athletes surpass qualifying marks in winning fashion. Stacey Pitt won the pole vault with 10-0, Katie Pilsch won the discus with 118-10, Kyle Griffith jumped 20-7 in the long jump and Kyle Montini went 42-5 1/2 in the triple jump.

"Especially early in the season we like to look at having duals because it gives the kids an opportunity to participate in more events than they would at a bigger meet," Glacier boys coach Arron Deck said. "We can run a quick and efficient meet and get home at a reasonable hour. We got what we needed out of the meet today and Whitefish, they have a nice track team. They always come down and compete."

"The marks that we put up were as competitive as a lot of the track meets that I've seen in the state," said Boschee, the Wolfpack girls coach. "It was a really good day. I think both of us (Glacier and Whitefish) got something out of it."

Glacier freshman Anna Deleray turned in an impressive 800 win and just missed qualifying. Similar success came from 400 winner Heather Fraley, triple jump winner Leah Cook and Pilsch, who besides winning discus turned in the top measurement in the shot put.

"We posted some good marks with Deleray, Maddey, Heather and Leah," Boschee said. "We're picking up a little steam and kinda smiling a little more."

The Glacier boys are reigning Western AA divisional champs and the girls were runner-up last spring and are currently without state champ Lexy Boschee or Rachel Cutler.

On the boys side, Whitefish senior Anto Daoud shined in the sprint events, winning the 100 and 200 in quick work.

But not all the success came from being out front.

Early in the meet, Whitefish coach Derek Schulz had to remind senior Cole Havens that he was only allowed to compete in the maximum five events.

"I try to do the most I can and just have some fun," said Havens, who has played a sport every season of his high school career. "I mean I don't want to go to an event and stay there for 10 hours and only do one thing. I try to get as much in as I can."

In 70-degrees of heat, Havens was lining up as often as he could. In the 800, the hard work paid off and he hit a personal best for the season and inched closer to reaching his goal of achieving a fast enough time to make state.

But what a labor of love it was. After crossing the finish line and just before taking an exhausted rest on the cool grass, Havens was asked what he liked most about the 800 ...

"Nothing. I absolutely hate the event actually," he said between hard-earned breathes. "It's just the event I'm best at so why not take advantage of that?"
