Bates drops Braun, again
HELENA - Bates is just better.
At least so far this season.
Kellen Bates, Glacier's standout freshman, crushed two-time defending state champion Eric Braun of Missoula Hellgate on Saturday 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match of Flight 1 at the Helena Invitational tennis tournament.
It was the second meeting of the season for the players. Bates dropped Braun a week ago in dual play in Missoula, 6-2, 6-4.
Glacier had another tournament champ in Flight 1 doubles with Cami Mathison and Veronica Walton.
Glacier's Liana Bates came through with her best performance to date versus Ellie Crum of Great Falls High, but came up short in Flight 1 singles. Crum, the defending state champ, beat Bates, a junior, 6-2, 6-7 (2), 10-3.
Bates is a two-time state runner-up.
"It was some of the best tennis I've seen from her (Liana Bates)," Glacier assistant coach Cameron Rozelle said.
"It's the first set she's ever won against her."
Rozelle said Liana Bates showed great patience.
"She was hitting a lot deeper, setting up her points better," he said.
"Ellie is just so consistent.
"It's gonna be a big confidence boost because she (Crum) is beatable," Rozelle added.
"She won't be intimidated by her as much."
