Glacier senior Maddey Frey (center) sprints to the finish line in the 100 in the crosstown dual with Flathead at Legends Stadium on Tuesday.

After 16 track and field events and three side-by-side legs of the 1,600 relay, the honor of being the top girls team in Kalispell came down to one final lap.

Tess Brenneman, who set a state-best in the long jump earlier in the meet, pulled ahead in the final stretch and ran away with the Flathead victory on a day highlighted by orange and black.

On an overcast Tuesday at Legends Stadium, the Bravettes tallied 10 first-place finishes including the walk-off win in the long relay to break a 70-all tie and edge Glacier 75-70.

On the boys side, the Braves beat the Wolfpack 82-63 for the third straight year.

It was the second closest margin of victory for the girls teams in the three-year crosstown history. Flathead edged Glacier two years ago 74-71. Glacier won last year 94-51.

"They competed great. I can't find a complaint from the day," Flathead girls coach Kirtlye Lohof said. "We had tons of great marks and an exciting relay finish."

In what was expected to be one of the duals of the day, Brenneman won the 200 in 26.17 without having to face her crosstown nemesis, Glacier senior Maddey Frey. Similarly, Frey, with a time of 12.96, ran off with a win in the 100, which Brenneman didn't compete in.

But the two girls did meet in the long jump pit, and it was the underclassman who came out ahead. Brenneman leaped 18-feet-4 inches, which surpassed Frey's previous state-best of 18 1/2.

Flathead's Annie Cronk swept the hurdle races, winning the 100 in 16.99 and the 300 in 49.18.

On the boys side, Zach Perrin won the 1,600, clocking 4:29.07. The time just missed passing David Vidal's freshman record.

In Missoula on April 17, Perrin broke Brad Treat's 17-year-old freshman record of 9:44 in the 3,200 by running a 9:40.

On Tuesday, Perrin went stride-for-stride with senior teammate Leif Castren in the 3,200 and pulled away to win in 9:55. Both runners qualified for state in the two distance races.

"Zach surprised me when he ran that 9:40 down in Missoula. That really did surprise me," Flathead distance coach Paul Jorgensen said. "The boys have worked real hard so that hard work is starting to pay off."

Sophomores John Collins and George Sherwood each turned in multiple first-place finishes for the Braves. Collins swept the hurdles - winning the 110 in 16.63 and the 300 in 42.58 - and ran a leg on Flathead's winning relay teams along with Sherwood. Sherwood also won the 100 in 11.55 and the 200 in 23.33.

"We were happy to get in a meet where we could compete all of our atheltes," Flathead boys head coach Dan Hodge said. "Lots of the kids needed a starting point and today was a good starting point for them."

Flathead freshman Kwyn Johnson qualified in the girls triple jump with a winning mark of 34-7 1/2. Teammate Briana Patyk also qualified in the high jump after clearing 5-0 to win.

Glacier's Katie Pilsch won both the girls shot put (35-4) and discus (108-1).

Shane Freese remained the city's best high jumper for the third year in a row after clearing 6-0. The Glacier junior also won the long jump in 19-7. Glacier's Kyle Griffith unseated teammate Kyle Montini as the top triple jumper, winning with 41-5. Montini had won the previous two years.

Heather Fraley won the crosstown 1,600 for the third straight year. The junior distance runner clocked a winning time of 5:32.

Flathead's Alec Surynt won the 800 (2:05.95), Dominic Eickert won the pole vault (12-6) and Karl Ingram won the javelin (170-3).

Glacier's Tanner Morrison took tops in the discus (153-8), Shay Smithwick-Hann won the shot put (47-6 3/4) and Tim Doepker won the 400 (53.78).

For girls, Flathead's Jaclyn Rauthe won the 400 (1:03), Paige Bouma won the 3,200 (12:18) and Katina Cabanilla won the javelin (107-7).

Glacier's Makenna Siebenaler won the pole vault (8-0), Anna Deleray won the 800 (2:26.05) and the Wolfpack won the 400 relay.

NOTES: Flathead's Rose Byrne was recently incorrectly identified as having ran the seventh best 400 time in the state. The name was incorrectly reported to the Inter Lake. The mark belongs to Brenneman.
