Braves wind up second at Butte ; Glacier downs Blue Ponies for third

BUTTE - Two long days. Seven duals. A ton of tough teams.

The Mining City Duals is a difficult weekend to get through early in the wrestling season, but both Kalispell teams managed to come out with some hardware.

Flathead finished second as it fell 43-30 to Bozeman in the championship dual while Glacier defeated Havre 36-32 for third.

In earlier duals Saturday, Flathead defeated Helena 42-37, Sentinel 42-36 and Glacier 42-32.

Glacier defeated Great Falls 43-33 and Billings Senior 56-24.

Polson fell in all three Saturday duals, losing 51-36 to Corvallis, 66-18 to Havre and 54-27 to Senior. Columbia Falls fell 48-42 to Big Sky, but defeated Hardin 51-36.

"Little disappointed," said Flathead coach Matt Owen.

"There were some bright spots, but we lost too many close matches today. We just had some letdowns.

"But the great thing is, it's early and we just need to get back in that practice room," he said.

"We lost to definitely a worthy opponent. Bozeman had a great tournament. They're extremely tough," he added.

As for the Wolfpack, it came home feeling pretty good.

"I just thought our kids battled through it as well as we could have at this point in the year," said Glacier coach Mark Fischer.

"We're a sore bunch right now, but I'm really proud of the way they wrestled. There were a lot of ways we could have lost some of the duals today. The kids just battled and I was happy to see that," he said.

"This was a great experience for our kids. Right now they're having a lot of fun," Fischer said.

The Wolfpack got big moments from several kids.

Lucas Mantel rallied from a 7-0 deficit against Havre, Shane St. Onge got a big win over Flathead's Steel Hahn and Christian Knopp came from behind in his match of the Great Falls dual to get a pin, Fischer said.

As for the Senior dual, "the kids got on a roll and it was a real dominant performance. They just went after it. It was great. We had the momentum from the beginning," he said.

"(The Braves) are disappointed. We go into every tournament hoping to get a win, but we're going to use it as motivation to keep going and get better," Owen said.

As for the aformentioned bright spots, Connor Thomas "definitely had a great tournament," the coach said.

The senior heavyweight's day included a double overtime win over Class AA state champion Tucker Erickson of Helena High.

The two were tied with 10 seconds left in the second overtime when Thomas got an escape.

Owen also complimented the efforts of Larry Francis at 160.

"I don't know if he pinned everybody (this weekend), but he was close," Owen said.

The Braves head to the Tri-State Tournament in Coeur d'Alene next week while Glacier is at the CMR Holiday Classic in Great Falls.
