GREAT FALLS - Homecomings are always nice, even when you have to beat your old team.

That's how it was for Glacier girls head basketball coach Kris Salonen on Friday.

The former all-state Great Falls High basketball player picked up her first victory as a head coach against her alma mater after the Wolfpack defeated the Bison 47-39. The win was Glacier's third-straight.

"It's fun to go back home. It's fun to see everybody, friends and family. It's nice to get a win in front of all them" said Salonen, who took over the Glacier position midway through last season and head coached at Columbia Falls previous to that.

"The girls came out and played great."

Salonen, formerly Kris Schmitt, graduated in 1985 and went on to become a standout track athlete at the University of Montana, setting nine school records in the sprints and hurdles. She became the first female Griz athlete to break a minute in the 400-meter hurdles and was named one of Montana's top 50 greatest athletes ever in the Dec. 27, 1999, issue of Sports Illustrated.

On Friday, Cassidy Hashley scored 16 points, Paige Latimer had 11 and the Wolfpack girls outscored the Bison 26-15 in the second half. Ashlee Waggener added seven points and Cami Mathison chipped in five for Glacier (3-1).

The Wolfpack play Lake City in Couer d'Alene on Tuesday for the last game of 2010.
