Hoops Roundup: Libby sinks fifth-ranked Polson; Eureka splits

POLSON — Colton Cannon scored a game-high 17 points and Alex Cislo added 11 as Libby knocked of No. 5-ranked Polson 41-40 on Saturday night.

Polson had a chance to win it, but Vince DiGiallonardo’s 10-foot jumper from the baseline rimmed out at the buzzer in a low-scoring fourth quarter. Libby outscored Polson 7-4 in the final eight minutes.

DiGiallonardo led Polson with 14 points.

Tyler Krell had a double-double for the Pirates with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

 Polson was playing without Tim Rausch, who is competing in the Under Armor All-American baseball series in Arizona. Rausch is second in Northwestern A in scoring, averaging 17.29 points per game.

The league’s top scorer, Kyle Bagnell of Polson, was held to six points. Bagnell is averaging 17.7.

Libby improves to  5-4 overall, 1-1 in league. Polson slips to 6-3 and 2-1.

Troy 58, Eureka 53

EUREKA — Senior poise and a balanced offensive attack led to a Troy victory in crunch time of a District 7B conference showdown with Eureka.

Jake Alexander made six free throws in the fourth quarter while Ryan Rayson, Trent Cratty and Brian Hammrich each scored 13 points apiece and the Trojans broke the tie with roughly two minutes to go and went on to seal the win.

“Their senior leadership took over. They’d been in that position before and they kept their emotions at the right spot,” Eureka coach Chad Dunn said. “Our emotions were high and it was tougher to check them and get a score.”

Ryan Holder scored a game-high 20 points and Tanner Peterson added 11 for the Lions (1-8 overall, 0-5 in conference).

Eureka heads to ninth-ranked Bigfork on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game.

Bitterroot Home School 60, Stillwater 53

Stillwater battled back in the second half, but the Cougars came up seven points short at Bitterroot Home School in MCAA play on Friday.

Stillwater, held to four points in the second quarter, trailed 37-17 at the half. The Cougars outscored Bitterroot 22-10 in the third period to make for an interesting fourth quarter.

Trevor Holladay scored 12 of this team-high 20 points in the third quarter. Josh Bray added. 10.

Polson 49, Libby 38

POLSON — Nicole Davey and Riley Kenney powered the Lady Pirates to their third-straight Northwestern A victory with a home win against Libby.

Davey had 14 points and 15 rebounds and Kenney had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Polson improved to 7-2 overall.

Sierra Pete chipped in nine points for Polson.

Jaime Gilden paced the Loggers (4-4 overall, 1-2 in conference) with 14 points and LaRona Luscher and Alyshia Martin each added six.

Libby standout Jackie Mee injured her wrist in the third quarter and returned to limited action.

Polson hosts Flathead on Tuesday for a nonconference matchup at 7:30 p.m. Libby goes to Glacier on Jan. 23 for a 2 p.m. nonconference match.

EUREKA — Tayler Holder scored a game-high 18 points, Steph Vogelman followed with 17 and the Lions cruised past Troy for the District 7B conference victory.

Holder and Vogelman both grabbed seven rebounds and Carly Hammond added six steals and six assists to go along with her two points for Eureka (5-5 overall, 4-1 in conference).

“I thought we did a real good job defensively other than a little stretch in that second quarter when (Kimmy) Klin went off,” Eureka coach John Hammond said. “Other than that we did what we wanted to do defensively and I was really happy with the way the girls played.”

Klin lead Troy with 10 points.

Eureka hosts Bigfork on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
