Prep Basketball: Whitefish girls grab first win

WHITEFISH — Danielle McCully scored 16 points and Mariah Kanistanaux added six points and nine rebounds as the Whitefish Lady Bulldogs downed Ronan 42-36 for their first win of the season in a Northwestern A matchup on Thursday.

“We’ve told them all year to keep believing in what we’re trying to do and this is going to build toward divisional,” said first-year head coach Sean Duff.

Whitefish (1-11) plays at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Libby.

Alice VanGunten paced Ronan (1-12) with 11 points.

Polson 58, Hamilton 45

HAMILTON — Riley Kenney scored 18 points, Sierra Pete had 14 and the fifth-ranked Lady Pirates held off a late rally by Hamilton to win their 10th game of the season in a nonconference showdown between Northwestern A and Southwestern A.

Polson (10-2, 4-0) lead 25-18 at halftime and came out in the third and outscored the Lady Broncs 16-2. Hamilton (4-7, 2-3) went on to score 25 in the final frame, but it wasn’t enough to catch Northwestern A’s top team.

Mariah Hamel and Nicole Davey each scored nine for Polson, who host Stevensville on Saturday at 6 p.m.

EUREKA — Jackie Mee returned to the floor and returned to form, leading Libby with 17 points as the Loggers took care of Eureka in nonconference play.

Mee, who had been out of action with a wrist injury, scored 12 points in the first half and Libby (6-5) built a 29-13 lead by halftime. Jaime Gilden added 12 for the Loggers.

“Early on we really did struggle. They got their hands on a lot of our passes, but I think we adjusted very well the second half,” Eureka coach John Hammond said.

District 7B Eureka (6-6) cut the lead to nine during the second half thanks to 16 points in the third quarter.

Steph Vogelman led the Lions with 10 points and Cassidy Morgan chipped in nine.

Libby hosts Bigfork next Tuesday while Eureka hosts Whitefish on Feb. 4.

COLUMBIA FALLS — Kayla DeWit scored a game-high 23, sister Kelsey added 17 and the Wildkats cruised past the Class B Bluehawks.

Columbia Falls (8-5) jumped ahead 25-3 after the first quarter and led 42-12 at half.

Dani Gilley and Shay Grilley added nine points apiece for the Wildkats, who enter the final stretch of Northwestern A play next Thursday at Polson.

RONAN — Lucas Black had 16 points to go along with Kevin Wroblewski’s 11 and the Chiefs edged the Bulldogs in a tight Northwestern A showdown.

Connor Silliker paced Whitefish (3-9, 1-4) with 15 points, Mac Roche added 13 and Gage Vasquez scored nine. Trevor Olson chipped in eight for Whitefish, who keep up the conference action with a road game against Libby on Saturday.

Justin Dustybull had 10 for Ronan.
