Weather interferes again

It's starting to get old

Weather again was a factor, this time at the Kalispell Invitational on Saturday.

Singles were scheduled for the courts at Flathead Valley Community College with doubles play to take place at two sites in Whitefish. After a few doubles matches were completed, rain forced the remainder of doubles play to head south to FVCC.

With singles and doubles on the same courts and six teams in attendance, it proved to be a long and busy day. Rain eventually halted play with no finals held in singles or doubles.

Many consolation matches were also not finished.

Last week at the Missoula Invitational, rain washed out much of that action after the semifinal round.

"Definitely disappointing," Glacier coach Josh Munro said of having tournaments end this way.

"Still, a lot of good quality play from the girls (today). Everybody got to play at lease twice. We dodged the rain all day. The kids handled it well."

Glacier's top singles player, freshman Kellen Bates, advanced to the unfinished finals with two victories. Weather permitting, he would have played two-time defending state champ Eric Braun of Missoula Hellgate in the finals.

Bates is undefeated on the season and has already beaten Braun twice.

In girls singles, it would have been an all-Glacier final at No. 1 with Liana Bates and Hailey Blalack.

The only disappointing note for Glacier was Cami Mathison and Veronica Walton at No. 1 doubles. They lost for the first time in the first round to Missoula Hellgate's Michelle Carey and Taylor Simkins, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10).

"Despite being really, really sick, they played pretty well," Munro said of his top doubles team.

Munro said Phillip Phattharaampornchai, who has played doubles for much of the season, had a good day at No. 1 singles. Phattharaampornchai beat Lee Fritsen of Missoula Hellgate 6-3, 6-4 before falling to Bates 6-4, 6-3.

"That was a good win (over Fritsen) for Phillip," Munro said.

"Fritsen won two or three matches at state last year."

Tyler Schiff of Whitefish was a semifinal winner at No. 2 singles. Also winning semifinal matches were Glacier's Ryan Schmauch at No. 4 singles, Flathead's Anna Stone at No. 4 singles, Flathead's Jeremy Zug and Andrew Klingingsmith at No. 3 doubles, and Flathead's Andrea Battello and Susan Sievers at No. 2 doubles.

Up next for Glacier and Flathead is AA divisional play versus Great Falls High and Great Falls C.M. Russell on Thursday and Friday in Kalispell.
