Pairings set for AA state tennis
Glacier’s Kellen Bates will put his 19-match winning streak in singles play on the line this weekend at the Class AA state tennis tournament in Bozeman.
Bates, a freshman, will face Nick Staffileno of Billings Senior in the opening round on Friday at Montana State University.
Bates will be the favorite, having already defeated two-time defending state champion Eric Braun of Missoula Hellgate.
Braun is competing in doubles at state along with his brother Alex. They open up against Kyle Schmauch and Brandon Simpson of Glacier.
Also for the Glacier boys, Patrick Phattharaampornchai (6-5) has drawn Thomas Staffileno of Billings Senior in the
first round. Phattharaampornchai spent the majority of the season playing doubles.
Two-time state runner-up Liana Bates of Glacier will face Morgan Simkins of Hellgate on Friday in the first round.
Teammate Hailey Blalack (15-4) and Dani Sheridan of Missoula Big Sky are paired in another first-round match.
Defending state champion Ellie Crum of Great Falls High will face Jaymi Wevers of Hellgate on Friday in the first session. Crum and Bates (17-2) are in opposite brackets.
Crum defeated Bates in three sets last weekend to win the Northern AA divisional title in Kalispell.
In doubles, Glacier’s Cami Mathison and Vernonica Walton start off with Christy Williams and Christine Moen of Billings Skyview; and Katlyn Hacke and Amy Snipstead will play
Haley Swain and Katherine Cole of Billings West.
Mathison and Walton have lost just once this season. They captured a divisional championship last weekend, along with Kellen Bates.
