HELENA — Runners-up no longer. The Glacier girls are the best in the west in track and field.

The Wolfpack had five first-place finishes and 10 qualifying performances on the second day of the Western AA divisional to win the first divisional trophy in the program’s three-year history on a rainy Saturday at Vigilante Stadium.

Poor weather or not, this year the Wolfpack girls were running the victory lap at the end.

“Our girls didn’t let the rain affect them. They just took care of business,” Glacier coach Jerry Boschee said. “To win by 35 points is a great feeling. The girls put together two pretty great days. To score in every event except the 3,200, I would have never guessed it.”

After coming up short the past two years, Glacier traded roles with two-time defending champ Missoula Big Sky and outnumbered its track nemesis 136 1/2 to 100. Helena High was third with 90 points and Flathead took fourth with 73.

On the boys side, Kalispell’s two teams placed in the top three as Flathead came in second with 97 1/2 points and Glacier took third with 93. Helena Capital won for the first time since 2006 with 128 points.

Flathead senior Leif Castren won the 1,600 while teammates Zach Perrin and Jesse Bennett came in second and third, respectively. Glacier’s Tanner Morrison won the discus.

Senior Maddey Frey was a double-winner for the Wolfpack, placing first in both the 100 and 200. Lexy Boschee won the triple jump and took second in the 100 hurdles.

Katie Pilsch had the top discus throw as the Wolfpack piled up its most points in the field events. In the high jump, Stacey Pitt was second and Chelsea Rosean was fourth. Kyrsten Pilsch placed fourth in the javelin and Leah Engebretson finished fifth in the triple jump. On the track, Heather Fraley took third in the 1,600 and ran a leg on the winning 1,600 relay team with Makayla Mitchell, Kayla Byle and Anna Deleray.

Flathead’s George Sherwood placed second in the 100 and third in the 200. The Braves 1,600 relay team took fourth.

The Bravettes were led by sophomore Tess Brenneman, who won the 400, took second in the 200 and third in the 100.

Other placers for the Glacier boys were: Taylor Hart, third in the 400 and fifth in the 200; Brandon Munroe, fifth in the 100; Tim Doepker, fifth in the 200; Kyle Griffith and Kyle Montini, third and fourth, respectively, in the triple jump; and Matt Russell, fourth in the discus.

The AA state meet is next Friday and Saturday in Great Falls.
