LAUREL - Kayla Carlson will go down as one of the best distance runners in Bigfork track history, and Friday's state-champion performance only cemented her status.

Carlson cruised to an easy victory in the girls 1,600 to win her first of a possible three state titles at the Class B state meet on Friday.

The senior distance star clocked 5:11.09, which was eight seconds off the 1998 state record set by Sabrina Monro of Jefferson.

Carlson, who also is the top contender in today's 1,600 and 800, accounted for Bigfork's only points as the Vals sit tied for fourth with 10. Three Forks leads with 24 points.

On the boys side, Thompson Falls leads with 46 points.

Eureka's Bailey Malecha placed fifth in the 400 while teammate Robert Van Hyfte took sixth in the boys discus.

Competition concludes today.
