Mee falls in semis; settles for third
BILLINGS - Jackie Mee's bid for a second-straight Class A state singles title and undefeated season came to a surprising halt during semifinal tennis action on Saturday.
Morgan Opp of Glendive pulled off the stopper, dropping Mee, 6-4, 6-3. Opp then dispensed with Taylor Steubs of Billings Central 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 in the championship match.
It was Mee's first loss after 18-straight victories and marked the first time this spring she had lost a set.
Mee, a senior at Libby, went 20-0 last year and lost just one set, which was in the state finals.
Mee did bounce back to down Jane Probst of Polson 6-2, 6-0 to claim third place. Mee defeated Probst 6-3, 6-1 for the Northwestern A divisional title last week in Kalispell.
Mee finished sixth at state her sophomore year and was fourth as a freshman.
Glendive totaled 32 points to capture the girls state team title. Polson was next with 20 followed by Livingston with 18.
Polson's Kayla Rochin and Kendyall Rochin placed fourth in doubles to help the Pirates pick up a runner-up trophy. Morgan McCann and Jolee Landgraf of Havre defeated the Rochins 6-1, 6-1 to claim third place.
TJ Benson and Alex Cislo of Libby finished third in doubles while teammate Cree Maloney placed six in singles to help the Loggers place third in the team standings with 15 points.
Corvallis rolled up 59 points to run away with the team championship. Havre finished a distant second with 17.
Benson and Cislo downed Jesse Robins and Steve Sheehy of Billings Central, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) in the consolation final.
Spencer Fehr of Corvallis outlasted Maloney to finish fifth, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3).
