Shuman's 10th goal lifts Flathead over Helena

HELENA - Chelsea Shuman's 10th goal of the season ended up being the difference in a Western AA girls soccer game between Flathead and Helena on Saturday.

Shuman scored in the opening minutes of the second half and the Bravettes' defense did the rest from there as Flathead won 2-1.

"Our girls came out and played really hard after a hard-fought battle with Glacier on Thursday. It was important for us to get things going again," Flathead coach Scott Warnell said. "This gets us rolling toward the end of the season hopefully."

Goalkeeper Karli Kusler made seven saves and Bailey Poe tied the game off an assist from Jaclyn Rauthe in the first half for Flathead (4-1-3 overall).

POLSON - Make it eight straight.

The Whitefish girls keep rolling through the season and won their eighth game in a row, improving to 9-1 overall and 6-0 in conference with a shutout of Northern A foe Polson.

"We just connected really well today," Whitefish coach Erin Morrison said. "We were moving the ball so well and letting the ball do the work. The girls are really coming into their own. It's cool to see."

Presley Pritchard had a goal and assist and Karissa DeMarco, Megan Danczyk and Natalie Gayner added a goal apiece for the Bulldogs.

LIBBY - The second-place team in Northern A has a streak of its own.

The Columbia Falls Wildkats, led by Class A's new top-scorer McKenzie Kiser, defeated Libby to win their fifth game in a row.

Kiser, a junior, scored twice to hike her season total to 18 goals. Kiser has now scored 12 goals in the last five games.

"She's a coach's dream," Columbia Falls coach Greg Trenerry said.

Danielle Delventhal, a sophomore, is following Kiser's lead and scored her 13th goal of the season on Saturday. Cedar Jordt also had a goal and assist for Columbia Falls (8-2 overall, 6-1 in Northern A). The Wildkats' only conference loss came to Whitefish.

HELENA - Helena Capital added a game-winning goal with three minutes left to down the Wolfpack.

Chantal Gustine had Glacier's lone goal.

"I can't fault the girls for effort, we just didn't play the way we needed to to get the job done," Glacier coach Paul Holmgren said.

The Wolfpack (1-5-2) host Missoula Big Sky on Thursday at 3 p.m. Senior day is next Saturday against Missoula Hellgate at 1 p.m.

HELENA - Joe Siderius scored off an assist from Ian Cavigli but the Wolfpack couldn't keep the rally alive in falling to Helena Capital in Western AA boys soccer.

"The guys came out and played very hard right from the beginning," Glacier coach Ryan O'Rourke said. "Joe's goal was probably one of our nicest this year ... It gave us a little bit of hope."

The Wolfpack (2-5-1) host Missoula Big Sky on Thursday at 5 p.m.

HELENA - A strong second-half performance lifted Helena past Flathead.

Flathead goalie Lander Crissman made 10 saves.

"We did a good job of defending in general but I think as we got tired that defending broke down," Flathead coach Chris Putzler said.

Flathead (0-8) travels to Missoula on Thursday for a game against Sentinel.
