Anna Mae Hughes, 80

Anna Mae Hughes, 80, of Missoula, passed away at Community Medical Center from ovarian cancer on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, while surrounded by her family. Anna Mae was born on March 3, 1930, in Polson, the eldest of four daughters of Murl and Ellen McAlear. Her early years were spent in the Turtle Lake and Polson area. During World War II, the McAlear family moved to Spokane where Murl worked as an electrician. Anna Mae loved the Spokane area and it was a happy time for her, with many pleasant memories. After the war the family moved back to Polson, and Anna Mae graduated from Polson High School in 1948. Upon graduation from high school, Anna Mae married Robert Earl Jake Jeakins in Polson, and a daughter Brenda, and a son Robert Jr., were born from this, her first marriage. Anna Mae attended college at the University of Montana for a time and later transferred to Western Montana College in Dillon, where she met George Preston Pres Hughes. Pres and Anna Mae were married in Dillon in 1958, and the couple moved to Missoula where Pres attended the University of Montana, obtaining his accounting and CPA degrees. After a short time in Helena, the family moved to Bozeman where sons Steven and Paul were born. This is where Anna Mae and Pres had many happy years raising their family. She was in the Alter Guild at St. James Episcopal Church. They then moved to Denver until Pres retirement, after which time the family moved back to Missoula. They then bought and ran the Downtown Motel, where Anna Mae enjoyed the many guests that she met. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining friends and family. She loved gardening and swimming and was a big fan of the Denver Broncos. Anna Mae always took great pride in her family and their accomplishments. Anna was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Pres; her daughter, Brenda; her parents; sisters, Myrna McAlear and Joyce Halverson; as well as her first husband, Jake Jeakins. Survivors include her sons, Robert Earl Jeakins and Paul Hughes, both of Missoula, and Steven Hughes and Beverly of Cincinnati, Ohio; her sister, Donna Feldbrugge, and Dick; brother-in law, George Halverson; five grandchildren, Ona and Marcus Crawford and Michaela, Erica and Olivia Hughes. She also was blessed with six great-grandchildren Eric, Mar kea, Darryl, Marcus Jr., Brandon and Marcellis; nieces, Jeanne, Heidi and Jennifer; and nephews, Ken, Tom and Curt. Anna Mae also leaves behind numerous beloved cousins and other family members and friends. Anna Mae will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. Memorials may be made in Anna Mae s name to Hilda s Room at Community Medical Center, 2827 Fort Missoula Road, Missoula MT 59804; or to the Missoula Public library. Viewing hours will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Garden City Funeral Home in Missoula, with the family available to greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, at the Lakeview Cemetery in Polson.
