Red ribbons will be the accessory of choice throughout the Flathead Valley next week.

Flathead CARE is sponsoring Red Ribbon Week from Monday, Oct. 25, through Saturday, Oct. 30. The annual event encourages families to spend time together and offers safe, drug-free events for kids and teens.

To get into the events, people must wear a red ribbon, available for free from the Flathead CARE office in the Linderman Education Center, 124 Third Ave. E. in Kalispell. But “official” red ribbons aren’t necessary; families may make their own out of fabric or construction paper.

On Monday and Tuesday, high school STAND (Students Taking Action, Not Drugs) students will be visiting local schools to share drug-prevention messages with their younger peers.

The Summit hosts swim night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Entry is free for members; all others pay $1. Limit 60.

Parisi Speed School at The Summit has an open house at the same time. The franchise offers specialized athletic conditioning and training. The open house is free for everyone.

Also on Wednesday, guitarist and Flathead High School teacher Steve Eckels hosts “An Evening of Music.” He and students from his guitar classes will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. at Norm’s News. Food will be available for purchase.

Thursday is free movie night at Signature Stadium 14 Cinemas. Showing is “How to Train Your Dragon,” rated PG for brief sequences of intense action.

People wearing a red ribbon will be admitted to the movie for free; some red ribbons will be available at the theater. The shows are first-come, first-served. There are no advance tickets.

Show times are approximately 4 and 6:30 p.m. Parents are asked not to drop off their children unless they have a ticket.

Woodland Park Ice Center hosts an open ice skate and Halloween party from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Entry is free; skate rentals are $2.50. There will be a costume contest, bonfire, games, music, concessions and prizes.
