A Kalispell man pleaded innocent Thursday in Flathead County District Court to brandishing a knife and head-butting a police officer.

Sergey Kubai was arrested Oct. 3 in Kalispell and is currently being held at the Flathead County Detention Center.

The Flathead County Attorney’s Office charged Kubai with felony assault of a peace officer and assault with a weapon Oct. 4.

The charges carry a combined maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a fine of $100,000.

According to court documents, officers responded to a downtown Kalispell residence after a report of a disturbance. Several individuals were holding Kubai on the ground as he screamed and threatened to kill them, according to court documents.

After being handcuffed, he allegedly head-butted a Kalispell police officer who was attempting to pat him down.

An investigation by Kalispell police officers revealed Kubai had become angry during an argument with his girlfriend. When his brother attempted to intervene, Kubai allegedly brandished a knife and told his brother he was going to stab him.

According to court documents, Kubai screamed uncontrollably while being transported to jail and beat his head repeatedly on the window divider in the patrol car.

He’s also allegedly threatened to kill law enforcement officers and their families and lunged at a police officer as he was being taken out of the patrol car, according to court documents.

Kubai remains in the Flathead County Detention Center with bail set at $150,000.
