Bravettes blank CMR in AA state soccer
GREAT FALLS - The Bravettes are off to a strong start at Class AA girls state soccer tournament.
Flathead blanked C.M. Russell 2-0 in the opening round on Thursday and move on to a semifinal match today.
Senior Chelsea Shuman had a goal and assist and senior keeper Karli Kusler made nine saves. Freshman Bailey Poe also added a goal for Flathead.
The Bravettes (8-2-3), the second seed from the West, will play defending state champion and top Eastern seed Billings West (11-2-0) at 9:30 a.m. West defeated Helena Capital on Thursday 4-1. The state's top scoring tandem, Savannah Witt and Danielle Muri, both scored two goals apiece. The duo has combined for 37 combined goals (Muri with 20 and Witt with 17).
Flathead is looking for its first top-three trophy since the program earned third in 2006.
In other first-round games on Thursday, Billings Senior (11-2-0) topped Missoula Big Sky (4-4-5) 3-2 and Bozeman (7-5-1) edged Missoula Sentinel (9-1-3) 1-0. Senior and Bozeman will meet at 9:30 today and play the winner of Flathead-West.
The championship game will be played at noon on Saturday.
