B football playoffs: Columbus trips Eureka in 2 OTs

EUREKA - A memorable Class B playoff football game ended poorly for the home team.

Columbus scored in both overtime series and held on to defeat Eureka 33-26 in a double overtime Class B first-round game on Saturday.

"Our game plan was to shut down their run because they've shown they can run the ball well. We did that very well, they just caught us with a couple passes," Eureka head coach Ed Newell said.

"Give them credit. We told our kids they needed to pass to beat us and they did. They made some plays."

Columbus tied the game in the fourth quarter with a 64-yard TD pass. In the first overtime, Andrew Derby scored for the Lions on a 4-yard pass from Chris Ibach. Eureka made the 2-point conversion, but the Cougars answered with a TD and conversion also. After that, it was all Columbus.

The Cougars scored in the second OT and kept Eureka out of the end zone on the 10-yard line in four plays.

Eureka turned the ball over four times in the game.

Ibach finished with three TDs and 90 yards rushing.

"It's one of those games you'll remember for a long time," Newell said.

"Obviously we would have liked to see it end differently but I'd certainly rather play a game like that where your kids play with everything they have."

Columbus advances to the quarterfinals where it will play Manhattan.
